Hobbs lives in Denver and spends time in Southwest Colorado.

He practiced environmental, transportation, land-use and water law for more than 20 years before he was a Colorado Supreme Court Justice from 1996 to 2015. Hobbs has written more than 250 majority opinions for the court in civil and criminal cases and currently serves as senior water judge for the Colorado courts.

Hobbs has also written several works of poetry and prose, including In Praise of Fair Colorado: The Practice of Poetry, History and Judging and Colorado Mother of Rivers, Water Poems.
