As an oil and gas company that has owned and operated wells for over 25 years in La Plata County, the recent tax bills from the Assessor’s office are more than the net revenue from production. No other county in Colorado has higher fees then La Plata County.
The fees demanded by the Assessor alone are 200 percent above our actual taxes assessed by the county. The fees and assessments have never been charged to San Marco Petroleum by other counties in Colorado. Because of loopholes the Assessor finds in the statutes he increases the fees to a level that makes it uneconomical to do business in La Plata County.
