The national newspaper called the 236-mile-loop (half of which locals take when Red Mountain is closed) “the crème de la crème” of the Rocky Mountains, citing turns, scenery and stops along the way to make for a great extended weekend.

So how did we do? How about ninth place, right in front of U.S. Highway 101.

At least the name San Juan Skyway sounds a lot better than Arkansas’ Pig Tail Scenic Byway, which was No. 2. Tennessee’s Tail of the Dragon is only 11 miles but also sounds pretty cool.

Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail took the No. 1 spot, 187 miles set along Cape Breton Island and much of that in Cape Breton Highlands National Park filled with mountains, ocean, moose and whales.

Bet they don’t have a chuck wagon cook-off.
