I was in tears most of the ceremony. The talks, not speeches, by both students and faculty were brave, honest and sincere. The student speakers acknowledged their fear of the future but knew they learned skills at AHS to prepare them for college.
The teachers and staff recounted how much they learned from this class. I loved the description of a teacher waking up in the morning to a “steaming cup of inspiration” thinking of her upcoming day with her students.
I don’t remember in the 1970s, when I went to high school, students or teachers being so vulnerable in public. I was moved to hear of the love, respect and happiness students felt for teachers and teachers for students. My outlook on life has been lifted by seeing the passion these graduates carry into the future. I am delighted to see AHS encouraging individuality, personal quirkiness and self-discovery. Excellence in classwork and presentation is always No. 1. I look forward to watching these young people evolve in their pursuits.
It’s easy to be pessimistic about all the ills of the world. I hope our young Durangatangs take what they learned here and help lift the spirits of all they can. Thanks to all who contribute to our youths!
