In June 1987, as a way to attract area youngsters to attend a registration event for summer recreational programs, U.S. Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell secured the appearance of a Cobra AH-1 army helicopter at the gathering. Landing on the lawn of Durango High School, the aircraft was based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs and valued at over $1 million ($2.6 million today). The event was not without some controversy, however. Here two of the 10 protesters who objected to the use of the military for such a purpose are shown carrying protest signs. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 04.05.452 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
