This photo was taken just a few years after Durango High School was built in 1916. Built for $175,000 and paid for by a bond issue that passed by only 37 votes, the building served as Durango’s high school until 1977. It has since served as the School Administration Building for Durango School District 9-R. It has been sold, pending finalization of the sale. Built in the Classical Revival style, the building is still considered architecturally unique and structurally sound. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Buckley Park is located in the foreground below the school. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum (Courtesy of La Plata County Historical Society)
