Astride his burro on the Fourth of July 1888, young Walter Boston is seen posing for his father, Jacob, along the 1100 block of Main Avenue. The 10-year-old was the winner of a race held during the Durango Independence Day Celebration. The Boston Photography Studio was an early mainstay in the Durango business community. The Sherman House hotel, seen across the street, was located at the corner of 11th Street and Main Avenue. Today, it is the parking lot for Durango Craft Spirits. The Boston Studio was located directly across the street and was likely the spot from which this picture was taken. The studio, along with the buildings shown here, all burned in the great downtown fire of 1889, a year after this picture was taken. –Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 99.31.15 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
