And the West is History: 32nd Street Bridge – 1963

With the recent completion of the pedestrian bridge and trail at 32nd Street, the city of Durango has accomplished the connection of the Animas River Trail from Oxbow Park to River Road (behind Home Depot). This picture shows a previous bridge in 1963. When this bridge was replaced, the new bridge was named the Emerson-Parks Bridge, in honor of fallen Durango first responders, killed in the 1974 Main Avenue fire. Note that East Second Avenue, East Third Avenue and 32nd Street were all unpaved. An 8-mile dedicated bike and pedestrian trail through Durango was not even a futuristic thought at the time this photo was taken. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 88.17.12 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
