Yes, education has that sort of impact.
The San Juan Mountains Association and Colorado Parks and Wildlife naturalists will host a Winter Discovery Walk for Families from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday – Martin Luther King Day – at Mancos State Park.
The event is open to families with children ages 4 and up. If ice is a safe thickness on the park’s Jackson Lake – park ranger Scot Elder will be on the lake Saturday to check things out – participants will venture out to learn about ice fishing and frozen lake ecology.
Bring your snowshoes for the short trek through the still-snowy park. Snowshoes will be provided to children who don’t have them; adults in need of snowshoes are required to pre-register (call 970-759-1170 or email Gabi Morey, SJMA Education Outreach director, at [email protected] before the event). There is a park entrance fee of $7 per vehicle.
A small price for outdoors youth education.

Officials vs. Cancer
Basketball and education – or at least awareness – will be on display during area high school basketball games played Friday through Jan. 31.
According to Craig Coutlee, area director for the Colorado basketball officials, working officials will don pink uniforms and whistles to show their support for cancer research.
“This effort is dubbed ‘Officials vs. Cancer,’” Coutlee said in an email to The Durango Herald. “We are also asking the local cheerleaders during the games to wear ‘stripes’ to make everyone aware of our efforts. We are hoping that they will solicit donations from the stands.”
Also, the Durango Basketball Officials Association will offer one male and one female scholarship for participating senior student athletes in basketball “from the high schools we service (Bayfield, Durango, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs),” Coutlee said. “Each applicant must complete the scholarship form and return it by March 31. Last year was our first award. Our goal is to give back in support as well as service to our student athletes.”
Coutlee may be contacted at 970-769-5000 for more info.
