Use your signal before slowing, not after numerous cars and trucks clumped up behind you prevent one at the rear from seeing it. If there is no oncoming traffic, a considerate driver will pull into the oncoming lane and complete their left from there, allowing the cars behind him or her to continue along in the right lane without slowing.
Signaling and showing a little courtesy on the roads goes a long way in preventing accidents. It also lets everyone else get home a little sooner.
