Made up primarily of World War II veterans, the Durango American Legion Post 28 Goldenaires was formed in 1946. An American Legion drum and bugle corps existed in the 1930s, but disbanded during World War II. The new “Goldenaire” version was popular and successful, with more than 300 La Plata County veterans participating over its 20-year existence. They were eight-time state champions and finished as high as 10th in national competitions. They contributed to almost every regional parade throughout the 1950s and mid-1960s. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum (Catalog Number: 89.29.7 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
