Former Women’s Resource Center Executive Director Tammy Tyner died by suicide, according to the La Plata County Coroner’s Office.
The cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Coroner Jann Smith told The Durango Herald.
Tyner, a longtime La Plata County resident, was found dead early Nov. 12, according to the Coroner’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office was notified about 6:40 a.m., said sheriff’s spokesman Chris Burke. Tyner’s body was found at the Vallecito Creek Trailhead in the 2700 block of County Road 500.
Tyner worked at the Women’s Resource Center for nine years until Nov. 6. Her departure from the position was announced the same day in an email to donors and sponsors.
The Women’s Resource Center board of directors declined to give a reason for Tyner’s departure from the nonprofit.
“Obviously, we are not able to comment on any personnel decisions made between the board and Tammy at any time,” Board President Ashley Truitt wrote in an email to the Herald on Tuesday. “After working with Tammy we are all personally devastated and heartbroken at this loss.”
Tyner’s daughter, Kaylee Schulz, declined to comment for this story.
Twenty-three people have died by suicide this year in La Plata County, Smith said.
