Friends of the Durango Public Library Bookstore now features a bargain cart of popular fiction and other categories for $1 each.

Regular bookstore categories include Durango and the West, children’s and young adult, cooking, travel, biography, history, literature, sports, audio-visual offerings and the arts – all individually priced.

The bookstore is in the library lobby, next to the Common Grounds Coffee Shop, 1900 East Third Ave.

The bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Energy-assistance program available

The Low-income Energy Assistance Program is accepting applications for the winter heating season

The program is designed to help eligible households pay part of their utility costs for their main heating source.

To qualify, applicants must be responsible for paying heating costs directly to an energy provider, fuel dealer or as part of their rent. Eligibility and benefits are determined by factors such as household income, type of dwelling, family size and fuel type.

This is a mail-in program administered by Discover Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado. Applications are available at the La Plata County Department of Human Services, 1060 East Second Ave., at most fuel vendors, La Plata Electric Association and local libraries and may be submitted until the end of April.

Bayfield library to offer cooking classes

Pine River Library and La Plata County Farm Bureau will celebrate “Colorado Cooking” Tuesday at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

Representatives from the Farm Bureau will lead two cooking classes, using products found in Colorado. The first class, designed for students in fourth- and fifth-grade, will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Participants must register in advance for this class, as space is limited. On the same day, at 6 p.m., another “Colorado Cooking” class will be held for adults.

Bird lovers hold walk on Wednesday morning

A bird walk will be hosted by Durango Bird Club at 9 a.m. Wednesday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

Nonprofits encouraged to apply for funds

The Intermountain Combined Federal Campaign Local Federal Coordinating Committee is seeking applications from charitable organizations who wish to be part of the campaign’s Charity List for the 2014 Campaign.

The campaign is the only authorized solicitation of employees in the federal workplace on behalf of charitable organizations. The campaign enables military and civilian federal workers, including U.S. Postal Service employees, to support charitable causes of their choice.

Combined Federal Campaign Charities are organizations with status as tax-exempt charities as determined by the Internal Revenue Service under 501(c)(3) of Title 26 of the United States Code that provide health and human services and that are determined to be eligible for participation in the campaign.

Local charities can apply by visiting www.intermountaincfc.org and then selecting “Applications & Instructions” under the “For Charities” drop-down menu.

Ignacio library to offer Excel class

The Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio, will offer “Introduction to Microsoft Excel” at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Participants will learn how to create basic spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel 2010. The class will cover the basics of columns, rows and cells and creating simple formulas. The class is free, but sign-up is required.
