The Colorado Department of Transportation announces an informational campaign focusing on pedestrian safety aimed at drivers and pedestrians.

The campaign employs the tagline: “Awkward Eye Contact Saves Lives – Heads Up At Crosswalks” and incorporates media placements around the state where awkward eye contact tends to occur. The campaign will run through September.

Construction begins on Dolores sidewalks

The town of Dolores has contracted with D & L Construction to build a sidewalk, curb and gutter along Railroad Avenue (Colorado Highway 145).

The project will replace about 600 square yards of sidewalk between First and Second streets on the north side of Railroad Avenue and between 8th and 11th streets on the south side of Railroad Avenue. Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps will be installed. The existing crosswalk at 11th Street will be realigned to connect two ADA-compliant ramps as well.

The project also includes the construction of about 700 linear feet of curb and gutter. Project construction began Aug. 25 and is scheduled for completion by Nov. 7.

Driver’s license training course available

A Commercial Driver’s License-training course is now available locally.

The course specializes in gas and oil industry driving training, as well as the other obstacles that are present in Southwest Colorado.

Fiesta on the Mesa to take place Monday

The 10th annual Fiesta on the Mesa celebration will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the Fort Lewis College Amphitheater.

El Centro de Muchos Colores, in collaboration with Club del Centro, Campus Dining and Union Programming, holds the event to promote pride in language and Hispano culture. Music will be provided by the Mexican norteño band called Grupo Control. Its 90-minute set will begin at 5:30 p.m. Ballet Folklorico de Durango will perform at 5 p.m., followed by a piñata for children, and the annual grito contest to celebrate the loudest and most authentic Mexicano Shout. Compañeros will have an information booth and also sell handcrafted items to benefit its work helping the immigrant community through advocacy, education and integrative programs. The authentic meal will be provided by Sodexo and is free to all FLC students, faculty and staff with ID. For community members and guests, the meal will be $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 10.

CSU football watch party to be held

A Colorado State University Football Watch Party will take place at noon Saturday at the Main Event Sports Bar & Grill, 42 East Animas Road (County Road 250) No. 400.

All CSU alumni and friends are invited. CSU will play University of California-Davis.
