Marcia Kuzma of Hesperus scored a baker’s dozen to cook the best of the rest of the Gridiron Green field by a stroke. Eight of her closest competitors checked in with a dozen correct, then there were a slew of 11s and 10s.
The Gridiron Guru was among the imperfect 10s at 10-6 in Week 1, tucked safely in the upper echelon of the middle of the pack and far from the bottom six, namely Atbatcat, chrissim33 and Evans, all of whom got one right. That’s right. One right, out of 16 games.
Thursday, Sept. 11
Pittsburgh at Baltimore – While the NFL put Ray Rice on ice, the Steelers could stamp themselves as early season AFC contenders. Pick: Steelers, 21-17. Line: Ravens by 2½.
Sunday, Sept. 14
Dallas at Tennessee – The star in this one is the steady-she-goes Titans, not the turnover-prone Cowboys. Pick: Titans, 24-23. Line: Titans by 3½.
New England at Minnesota – Patterson and Peterson are a 1-2 punch of diesel fuel against an old and out-of-gas Patriots. Pick: Vikings, 28-20. Line: Patriots by 3.
Miami at Buffalo – Old habits, such as losing, die hard. Pick: Dolphins, 19-13. Line: Dolphins by 1.
Jacksonville at Washington – The Jaguars should prove a more beatable foe than the Texans, particularly at home. Pick: Redskins, 14-13. Line: Redskins by 6.
Arizona at N.Y. Giants – These birds have beaks with teeth, and the Giants are playing small. Pick: Cardinals, 21-13. Line: Giants by 1.
New Orleans at Cleveland – A cool Brees blows through Cleveland; pay attention, Johnny Football. Pick: Saints, 31-21. Line: Saints by 6½.
Atlanta at Cincinnati – The Bengals are a tough out at home. Pick: Bengals, 27-20. Line: Bengals by 5½.
Detroit at Carolina – If Derek Anderson can do it, so can Cam Newton. Pick: Panthers, 30-23. Line: Panthers by 2½.
Seattle at San Diego – Do the Seahawks have an O to go with that championship-caliber, Super Bowl-winning D? Pick: Seahawks, 20-17. Line: Seahawks by 5½.
St. Louis at Tampa Bay – The Rams have a big (Shaun) Hill to climb to get out of the league’s cellar, and it starts with their defense. Pick: Rams, 17-13. Line: Buccaneers by 5½.
Houston at Oakland – Remember, the Texans started last year’s 2-14 season 2-0, too. Pick: Texans, 17-16. Line: Texans by 3.
Kansas City at Denver – Has anybody seen Jamaal Charles? Pick: Broncos, 40-20. Line: Broncos by 13.
N.Y. Jets at Green Bay – The Jets’ undefeated season gets frozen at the tundra. Pick: 26-16. Line: Packers by 8½.
Chicago at San Francisco – I didn’t see the Bears as an 0-2 team to start the season, but here we are. Pick: 49ers, 22-17. Line: 49ers by 7.
Monday, Sept. 15
Philadelphia at Indianapolis – Defense optional, this should be fun. First to 50 wins? Pick: Colts, 38-34. Line: Colts by 3.
