The second annual Peace & Unity Festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today at Buckley Park.

This is an all ages gathering focused around creating space for peaceful solidarity and unity on global peace day. Activities will include music, workshops, meditations, yoga and a 15 foot jumper for the kids.

Benefit account set up for Kodi McAlzain

A benefit account has been established for Kodi Grace McAlzain at the First National Bank of Durango.

McAlzain is the granddaughter of Calvin and Pat Story of Durango. She was diagnosed with leukemia in the beginning of September. Funds will go towards her treatment and hospital bills. The family asks for people to lift McAlzain in their daily prayers.

Fashion show to benefit county family centers

Local clothing designer Shari Andrews will host the Durango Rustic Glamour fashion show at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

Proceeds from the event benefit the La Plata Family Centers Coalition. Clothing lines from three designers will be showcased.

Designer Eleanor Greenbank’s line, “Tee Totalar,” features recycled materials and textiles. Designers Debbie Hoover and Ginger Wood’s free-form crochet line, “Not Your Grannies Afghan,” will showcase crocheted wearable fiber art. Andrews creates fashion-forward clothing for her line, “Dressed Up.” Fashions will be accessorized by jewelers Gretchen Magwitz and Tracey Belt.

Tickets for h’oerdouvers and fashion show are $50 and are available at the La Plata Family Center, Alpine Bank and Maria’s Bookshop.

Emergency-preparedness class to be offered

A “Dare to Prepare” class will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

This day is geared toward individuals and families. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the threats they face now, and the steps to take now to prepare. Participants will learn what to store, what to make, how to think outside the box, while using real priorities.

The instructor, Chuck Helvoigt, is a former U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer and currently the director of research for a monetary, economic and geopolitical newsletter, The McAlvany Intelligence Advisor, which regularly emphasizes preparedness and self-reliance during economic and political hard times.

Myths of porn to be discussed

Matt Fradd will present “7 Myths of Porn Exposed” at 7 p.m. Friday in the Vallecito Room of the Fort Lewis College Student Union.

Ignacio library to host family reading circles

Family Reading Circles will take place at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave.

This is a new program open to children aged nine and younger. It is an eight-week program. Participants will have dinner together, then separate, so that adults may learn about children’s books, and children will do a craft and story activity. The program is based on Motheread/Fatheread and is designed to bring families together to explore ways that they may enrich their children’s lives through books and reading.

Vendors sought for Holiday Craft Show

The Tiffany-Allison-Rosa-Arboles Historical Society at Navajo Lake will host a Holiday Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the TARA Community Center, 333 Milton Lane, Arboles.

Tables are available. The cost is $25 for a table before Oct. 1, or $35 after Oct. 1. Vendors will include handmade craft items, canned items, jewelry and custom T-shirts.
