Southwest Studies to open new exhibit
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will open the new exhibit “Masterpieces of the Durango Collection: Native Blankets from the Early American Southwest” with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Museum Gallery at Fort Lewis College.
A gallery tour will take place at 6 p.m. with Mark Winter, textile expert and owner of Toadlena Trading Post. Winter was instrumental in the development of the Durango Collection.
The majority of these Navajo and Puebloan textiles were made between 1860 and 1880, during a time when the American Southwest experienced significant change including the coming of the railroad, and the more readily available exchange of commerce, culture and ideas.

Bird watcher to talk about his adventures
The Mancos Public Library, 211 West First St., will host Chuck Haspels Bird Watching with a Camera from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Chuck Haspels will share his birdwatching adventures in the U.S.A., Korea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

Free legal clinic to be offered in Ignacio
A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on the second Friday of each month at the Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave. in Ignacio.
By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms and explain the process, and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues and civil protection orders.

Non-traditional rodeo to benefit food bank
The Durango Food Bank will host its first annual Stampede & BBQ on Oct. 11 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Arena, 2500 Main Ave.
This non-traditional rodeo will begin at 11 a.m. and features lawn mower races, bicycle barrel racing, musical poker chairs, youth motorcycle races, kids stick pony races and mutton busting. Events have multiple age groups, as well as prizes for top winners. To pre-register for an event, email [email protected].
Tickets are on sale now at Kellys Cowboy Company, Basin Coop, Fun Center of Durango and Tractor Supply. Tickets are $10, and children 12 and younger are free. Food and concessions will be available.
Danish Folk Dancers cancel show
The Danish Folk Dancers who were scheduled to perform at 4 p.m. today in Rotary Park, will be unable to make the performance.
