Only 20 volunteers showed – sadly the same people that participate every year. We really appreciated Fort Lewis College organizing a group in the spring, who came out and picked up along the river, around Rotary Park and the fish hatchery. However, we are wondering where the rafting companies were – those whose livelihood depends on the river.

Also, It would have been great if some residents of Durango came out to help as well. We certainly saw plenty of them out that day, riding bikes or walking the river trail, rafting, etc. I know public-service announcements went out to all the media promoting the annual Animas River Cleanup. Since Mercury is now on the river, perhaps it will take an interest and adopt the area closest to the campus – seems like it would be a perfect fit. From 32nd Street to the High Bridge, on both sides, is a lot of ground to cover for 20 people. Thanks to those of you who show up annually! The Animas River could really use additional support from our community.
