I’ve had a law practice here in Durango since 1981, and for the last seven years, Cynthia has worked with me. Those were some difficult years for Durango. Times like that allow you to get to know people. I will miss working with her, but I know that Cynthia will bring what we need to the job of county commissioner. She will bring a capable hand to the task of providing a predictable, available and fair land-use process. She will be an informed decision-maker – ready and qualified for the analytical work that precedes purposeful direction. She is capable of processing complex information and applying critical thinking to accomplish that direction and is particularly adept at engineering cooperation and consensus. She will not just take a position, but take action.
Diversity in what one brings to the table is preserved and enhanced by her addition to the board without introducing the impeding distraction of political philosophies. One cannot easily navigate a political philosophy about government gone wrong and then serve the high-performance demands of local government. This is where we work and where we live; we need to get shoulder-to-shoulder here. Cynthia can do that well.
Political agendas are necessarily moderated by the task at hand, and Cynthia recognizes that. She is prepared to keep attitudes about government in touch with the objectives of government – keep the county running smoothly, protect our interests and make well-considered, balanced decisions after due inquiry. She will listen without the noise of predisposition and act without the influence of special interests. Where we need it the most, here at home, the work of government cannot be sacrificed to divisive politics. With Cynthia Roebuck, it will be engaged constructively, with competence, understanding, enthusiasm and purpose.
I’m voting for Cynthia Roebuck – diversity without division.
