Since then, I have moved to Durango and use the airport with some frequency. The flights to Denver and Dallas are packed. The airport is full of people. Available parking is nonexistent. And upon my return, it seems to take forever to get luggage on the conveyor. For those of us who use the airport, the need for expansion is painfully clear. Expansion would greatly benefit us.
But what would be the benefits to those who do not fly often? Many! An up-to-date airport would attract more flights and more airlines with more embarcation points to Durango. This would attract more tourists and more customers for those who work in the tourist industry. It would also attract more major businesses with high-paying jobs to Durango. When these businesses select a new location, availability of air transportation is high on their list of considerations. Right now, Durango is failing in this regard. And we certainly need more high-paying jobs here! They would benefit not only those who obtain employment in those positions, but would also help existing businesses by giving them more customers.
The event at the Transit Center on Jan. 21 was highly informative as to various plans for airport expansion. Kudos to all involved!
Many like Durango the way it is, and I rather do, too. However, that is not an option for a small city or town. History has proved that they must either grow or die. Nobody wants to see the latter. And the city and county zoning procedures appear to be doing a good job at allowing for growth while maintaining Durango’s unique character, and we can expect that to continue through the economic growth from an expanded airport and the new business it would bring. I urge all city and county residents to support airport expansion.
