Mary Wardell, left, Anona Fletcher, center, and Tracy Bedard participated in the Dumpster Beautification Project in 2011. The project is gearing up to make the boxy steel trash bins more pleasing to the eye. The Dumpster Beautification Project is a community-based nonprofit, overseen by local artist Debra Greenblatt, that brings together local artists, at-risk youth and people of all ages to design and paint Waste Corporation America Dumpsters throughout Durango. Greenblatt noticed there was more and more graffiti on Dumpsters and buildings downtown, so she wanted to provide a more productive and beautiful avenue for budding artists. The project brings art to unexpected places – 18 locations so far – and gives artists a forum to show their work. Project artists teach basic design and painting skills. Several local businesses are sponsors.

The project is looking for artists to participate. This is how you do so:

1.
