The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners formed the Water Advisory Commission to answer policy questions tailored to encompass numerous water-related issues that La Plata County is currently exploring.
The commission is interested in obtaining public input about these matters, and will be taking public comment on the draft policy bulletins at its meeting at 1 p.m. April 23 at the La Plata County Road and Bridge Conference Room, 1365 South Camino del Rio.

Free gardening series to take place
A free gardening series will take place at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month beginning April 22 at the Animas Valley Grange, 7271 County Road 203.
Programs will feature local experts discussing a variety of topics followed by a question-and-answer session. Programs will include: cover cropping for soil health; irrigation and water conservation; patio gardening; getting more fruits and veggies with smoothies; obtaining and keeping bees; water quality in the Animas Valley; and young farmers and their future in the Animas Valley. Registration is not necessary. Refreshments will be served.

Herbal support for athletes discussed
Clinical herbalist Marija Helt will offer a class on herbal support for athletes providing ideas for injury prevention and for reducing pain and tissue damage after an injury from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dancing Willow Herbs, 1018 Main Ave.

Sexual Assault Awareness events
Sexual Assault Services Organization will acknowledge Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April with these events:
A community meeting on current Sexual Assault Policy and Practice in La Plata County will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Animas Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. This is a panel format meeting with organizations serving victims of sexual assault. There will be a question-and-answer session. Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided.
A SASO benefit will take place from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Friday at the American Legion, 878 East Second Ave. The event will feature music and dancing with Diabolical Sound Platoon and Eden’s Lane. There will be a raffle, door prizes, silent auction, cash bar and appetizers. The cost is $5. All ages are welcome.
A celebration of SAAM with the Elder Ground Band and community organizations will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 24 at the Fort Lewis College Amphitheater. Admission is free. There will be food and entertainment.
FLC Farm Stand open on Thursday
The Old Fort Farm Stand will be on campus from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Student Union.
The stand will feature potatoes, onions, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, pestos, roasted poblano chiles, roasted green chiles, dehydrated onions, mixed greens, arugula, spinach, radishes, cilantro, grass-fed beef and local pork.
