The La Plata Conservation District has been awarded a $25,000 grant to assist local landowners with weed removal.
The district and county will host two informational sessions to help interested parties with their applications. Both sessions will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 3 in the training room of the La Plata County Administration Building, 1101 East Second Ave.
People should enter the building by the north entrance off Second Avenue. Participants can recoup up to 50 percent of their herbicide costs with a maximum $300 payment. To download an application, visit www.laplatacd.org.

Old Fort Farm Stand to be open Thursday
The Old Fort Farm Stand will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday outside the Fort Lewis College Student Union.
The stand will offer spinach; mixed greens; romaine; arugula; curly kale; chard; radishes; broccoli; zucchini; carrots; beets; shishito; jalapeño; bell, mariachi and serrano peppers; beans; onions; leeks; rainbow potatoes; tomatoes; Anaheim green chiles; Pueblo chiles; shallots; garlic heads; basil; flat-leaf parsley; dill; cilantro; basil pesto; cilantro pesto; arugula pesto; kale chips; dehydrated onions; zucchini bread; pumpkin bread; roasted green or poblano chiles; caramelized onions; yellow pepper rings; grass-fed beef; and local pork.

Local author Lambert to read, sign book
Local author Ruth Lambert will host a book reading and signing of her book, The Wooden Canvas, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Backcountry Experience, 1205 Camino del Rio.
Lambert’s new book explores the art of regional arborglyphs and their historical significance. Arborglyphs are historic hand carvings in the trunks of aspen trees that were etched by the Hispano herders more than 100 years ago. Lambert, the cultural programs director of the San Juan Mountain Association, has catalogued this art form in her book.

Ute Indian Art Show is this weekend
The Ute Indian Art Show and Sale will take place Friday and Saturday at the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum, 503 Ouray Drive, Ignacio.
The show will include a mixed-media Ute tribe artist, sculpture, leather and beading experts, cradle board, flute makers, moccasins, photographers and more items handmade by members of the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Fort Duchesne, Utah. Demonstrations by artisans also will be offered.
