Volunteers sought for bicycle, ped count
Every other year in accordance with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project, the city of Durango performs counts of bicycles and pedestrians.
The National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project is a nationwide effort to provide a consistent model of data collection and ongoing data for use by planners, governments and bicycle and pedestrian professionals. Having accurate data helps the city of Durango to know how its infrastructure is being used and is necessary to secure grant funding for projects such as sidewalk repair, bicycle facilities and transit system improvements.
The Multi Modal Division of the city of Durango conducts these counts in the fall of every odd year. There is generally a series of three weekdays and one weekend day on which the counts are performed. This year, the city of Durango will conduct counts from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 22-24, and from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 26. The same 11 locations throughout the city limits are used every year that the counts are performed.
To conserve costs and encourage citizen participation, volunteers are recruited to conduct the actual counting. With four days of counting at 11 different location, there are a total of 77 spots that need to be filled by volunteers.
To volunteer, visit www. GetAroundDurango.com. Volunteers will receive a free drink from Durango Coffee Co. For more information, call 375-4901.
