The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners is seeking members of the community to serve on its Marijuana Local Licensing Authority.

The authority is made up of three members and one alternate member who are appointed to issue medical marijuana center licenses including: medical marijuana optional premises cultivation operation licenses; medical marijuana-infused products manufacturer licenses; retail marijuana store licenses; retail marijuana cultivation facility licenses; retail marijuana products manufacturing facility licenses; and retail marijuana testing facility licenses.

The duties of the authority include presiding over public hearings, making determinations and taking administrative actions related to license issuance, enforcement, suspension, revocation, renewal, transfer and modification.

Pink cans proceeds benefit breast cancer

Each can purchased will include an automatic $1 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Basin Health director to talk to Kiwanis Club

The Kiwanis Club of Durango will welcome Liane Jollon, executive director of San Juan Basin Health, at its weekly meeting at noon Thursday at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Jollon will give an overview of programs at San Juan Basin Health and she also will talk about the recent response of local public health in the Gold King Mine incident. Guests are welcome.

Plant pruning to take place at Overend Park

The city of Durango, with friends and neighbors of Overend Mountain Park, will prune vegetation along Overend Mountain Park trails at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Realauction to host free auction classes

Realauction will host instructor-led auction training classes hourly from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at the La Plata County Administration Building, 1101 East Second Ave.

Participants should drop in on the hour for personal training.

Realauction also will host webinar training classes via the Internet every Friday in October. The webinar training schedule will be as follows:

3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 23.

Noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 30.

Mercy Medical Center to bless therapy dogs

Mercy Regional Medical Center will hold a blessing for therapy dogs to honor feast day of St. Francis of Assisi at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercy Labyrinth outside the west side of the hospital.

Mercy chaplains, along with Fr. Kevin Novack of St. Columba Catholic Church, will bless the dogs and their owners. Therapy dogs and their owners visit Mercy and the Durango Cancer Center weekly to provide comfort and healing to patients, visitors and staff. The therapy dog program consists of 30 dog/volunteer teams representing the hospital’s largest volunteer group.

On the Roman Catholic Church calendar, Oct. 4 is the day which honors St. Francis, the 12th-century founder of the Franciscan order and church’s patron saint of animals and ecology.

Lecture series to cover historical death rituals

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present, “Undertaking –History, Humor, Current Trends and Options,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.

This presentation will examine the lighter side of death by looking at some old traditions and the reason they are carefully followed. The lecture will be presented by Ryan Phelps of Hood Mortuary.
