The Kiwanis Club of Durango will welcome Ray Rhode as its guest speaker at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Rhode, who is employed by La Plata Electric, will discuss efficient lighting. Guests are welcome.

Get your pumpkin at Old Fort Farm

The Old Fort Farm Stand will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday inside the Student Union at Fort Lewis College.

The stand will offer carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, locally produced dryland pinto beans, turnips, rutabagas, red cabbage, garlic heads, beet humus, basil pesto, Poblano and Anaheim chiles, yellow pepper rings, gluten-free carrot cupcakes, gluten-free pumpkin chocolate-chip cupcakes, zucchini bread, pumpkin chipper bread, broccoli potato soup, fajita mix, grass-fed beef and local pork.

Book and brew lovers get a club

The Durango Public Library will host books & brews from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Animas Brewing Co., 1560 East Second Ave.

The club will not discuss any particular title or theme, just books. To participate, people don’t need to register or have a library card, but attendees should be 21 years or older.

Commissioner Lachelt to hold office hours

La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt will hold office hours from noon to 2 p.m. Monday in the Animas Room of the Extension Building at La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants are invited to discuss issues of concern or interest, and share their opinions on county issues.

Blue Christmas Service to be held

Mercy Regional Medical Center’s 13th annual Blue Christmas Service will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Mercy Chapel.

The service is designed for people who are grieving. Patients and members of the community are invited. The 30-minute service, led by Mercy chaplains, will feature readings, a time of remembrance, live music and a guest speaker offering a healing message.

The service is for anyone who finds the Christmas season difficult because of the death or estrangement of a loved one, unemployment, loneliness, illness, loss of a pet or other hardships.
