One area of confusion seems to be the difference between caucuses and primaries. Colorado no longer has a presidential primary; your caucus is your opportunity to help select a presidential candidate. The remainder of the primary ballot will present races between members of the same party from U.S. senator down. If there are no contested races, the county clerk may cancel the election. Colorado’s primary election ballots will be mailed June 10. The deadline to return them is June 28.
Unlike the caucuses, you need not be previously affiliated to vote in a primary election. You may affiliate right on the spot the day of the election at a polling center, but you may vote only one primary ballot, Democratic or Republican. Also, the last day for voters who are affiliated with a political party to change or withdraw their affiliation if they wish to vote in a different party’s primary election is May 27.
Finally, all voters are urged to remember that democracy is not a spectator sport. La Plata County has many dedicated candidates, campaign managers and other workers, and every one of them will tell you that they can use more help in getting out their message. Make a difference – contact the candidate of your choice and find out what you can do.
