Third Three Kings Day celebration planned

In the third installment of its Mesa de Charla community events, Pine River Library will host an event celebrating Día de los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 6 at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive.

Children in Latin America and Spain receive the majority of their gifts from the Three Kings rather than Santa Claus. In the days leading up to Jan. 6, children across the Spanish-speaking world write letters to the Wise Men, asking for the presents they would like to receive.

The event will be a potluck, and participants are asked to bring a dish to share. Rosca de Reyes, a ring-shaped cake, will be served for desert. The celebration will be led by the La Plata Family Center and Durango 4-H.

The program series will continue with showings of installments of the PBS documentary series “Latino Americans” every other Friday, featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos and more than 500 years of history. These films will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8, Jan. 22, Feb. 5 and Feb. 19.
