The Kiwanis Club will host Judith Reynolds of Fort Lewis College as its guest speaker at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
She will talk about “Satire or sacrilege: The trouble with political cartooning today.” Besides teaching at the college, Reynolds is an author, journalist and political cartoonist.
State-of-the-State address on local TV
Durango Government Television, DGOV, has partnered with the Colorado Channel to provide a live telecast of the 2016 Governor’s State-of-the-State address. Gov. John Hickenlooper is scheduled to deliver his speech to a joint session of the Colorado House and Senate beginning shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday
In his remarks, the governor is expected to put forth his priorities and agenda for this year’s legislative session. The State-of-the-State and Durango Government Television can be viewed by Charter/Spectrum customers on channel 191. It can also be viewed by those using an antenna for their television reception on channel 10.1 in Durango and much of La Plata County, and on channel 6.2 in Montezuma and Dolores counties. DGOV programming is also streamed online at durangogov.org/DGOV.
City looks to fill open advisory board seats
The Durango City Council is seeking volunteers to serve on the following boards and commissions: Airport Commission, Board of Adjustment, Business Improvement District, Community Relations Commission, Design Review Board, Historic Preservation, Library Advisory, Multi Modal Advisory, Public Health, Natural Lands Preservation Advisory, Parks and Recreation Advisory, Planning Commission, Public Art Commission and Utilities Commission.
Boards and commissions generally meet on a monthly basis. Brief interviews with applicants will be conducted by city councilors in early February. Museum announces winter schedule
The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum, 503 Ouray Drive in Ignacio, will be open Saturday and feature an after-Christmas sale in the gift shop with 10 percent off purchases up to $75 and 25 percent off purchases more than $75.
Beginning next week, the museum’s winter schedule will begin from Tuesday through Friday until Memorial Day weekend. The permanent gallery is closed for maintenance.
