Ignacio library celebrating Dr. Seuss birthday
Read Across America is set for Wednesday, March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Ignacio Community Library will hold storytimes throughout the day and show a Dr. Seuss movie at 2:30 p.m.
“We encourage everyone to pick up a book and read to a child!” staff members said.
Infectious disease doctor speaking at FLC
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Robert L. Cox will give a presentation called “New Bugs, New Problems: Emerging Infections” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 at Fort Lewis College in Noble Hall, Room 130. This presentation is part of the Fort Lewis College Life-Long Learning Lecture Series in partnership with the Community Health Action Coalition. This is a free event with no pre-registration required.
Learn from Dr. Cox how to anticipate and prepare for future threats such as Chikungunya Fever, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, Ebola, Pandemic Influenza, and drug-resistant superbugs.

Library potluck, Latino film are next week
The Pine River Library in Bayfield continues its celebration of Latino heritage with its monthly Mesa de Charla community potluck and discussion series on Wednesday, March 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. All ages are welcome. Bring a dish to share.
The Latino Americans: 500 Years of History film series will conclude the same week with the final episode being shown at the library on Friday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. This award-winning series chronicles Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day.
These events are a part of the Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

Commissioners to meet public next week
County Commissionerss Gwen Lachelt and Julie Westendorff will hold their monthly meet the public sessions next week.
Lachelt’s meeting is Monday, Feb. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Extension Building Pine Room in Durango.
Westendorff’s meeting is Thursday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pine River Library in Bayfield.

Author to lead writing workshops at Ignacio school
Author and Colorado State University Professor Todd Mitchell will visit the Ignacio Middle School on Monday, Feb. 29 teaching a variety of writing workshops to local students. He is the author of The Traitor King, Backwards, The Secret to Lying and contributor to the graphic novel A Flight of Angels. Mitchell will present poetry and fiction workshops on Monday. Mitchell lives in Fort Collins, where he teaches creative writing and literature at CSU. This is the fourth author visit hosted by the Ignacio Community Library since 2012. This year’s visit is funded in part by a grant from the El Pomar Foundation.
Volunteers needed for Film Fest
The 2016 Durango Independent Film Festival is just around the corner, and volunteers are needed to help in the theatres and other areas. This is an opportunity to be a part of a unique film organization that screens global films, which connect filmmakers to the community. Festival dates are March 2 – 6 and training will be provided. Heart Safe LaPlata holding CPR class Thursday
Heart Safe La Plata will teach an adult CPR/AED class on Thursday, March 3.
Additionally, they will offer a CPR Pro class from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 11.
Both classes are at Durango Fire and Rescue Station 1 at 142 Sheppard Drive in Bodo Park.
