The Durango Botanical Society has some remaining openings in the docent class that begins March 5 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Pre-registration is required before Wednesday. The exact time of the training’s start will be provided to participants after they have registered. To register, call 769-3091.
Botanical Society docents are trained volunteers who educate the public about the best uses of water-wise plants uniquely suited to the Four Corners. They conduct tours and manage the maintenance of the Demonstration Garden behind the library and lead other educational events.
New docents will be a part of the five-fold expansion of the current garden, and will meet and work with noted gardening experts from the area and the state.
FLC Success Center to collect donations
The STEM3 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Student Success Center at Fort Lewis College will hold a community service project for National TRIO Day 2016 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at three different locations. The project’s goal is to collect donations for a number of community organizations.
Donations will be accepted at three locations: Steaming Bean Coffee Co., 915 Main Ave. (Collection point for the iAM Music Institute.), Chapman Ice Rink, 500 Florida Road (Collection point for the Manna Soup Kitchen.), and Durango Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031, 1550 Main Ave. (Collection point for the VFW.). The needs for these organizations run from household items to food and money to musical equipment. A list of the needs can be found at www.fortlewis.edu/stem3.
TRIO is a federal program aimed at helping first-generation, low-income, students and students with disabilities succeed in college. FLC is home to several TRIO programs, with the STEM3 program focusing on students studying the STEM disciplines.

Library to close early for local caucuses
The Durango Public Library and its branches will close at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to accommodate library staff participating in their local caucus.
Mesa Verde focus of March 2 talk
Donna Glowacki will discuss “The Times they are a-Changin’: Living & Leaving in 13th Century Mesa Verde” at 7 p.m. March 2 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St., Cortez.
Glowacki will talk about drawing on multiple lines of evidence including settlement patterns, pottery-exchange networks and changes in ceremonial and civic architecture. She will explore the social factors that contributed to regional depopulation in the northern San Juans. This talk will be presented by the Hisatsinom chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society.

Ignacio Library celebrates Dr. Seuss
Ignacio Community Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with story times all day Wednesday at the library, 470 Goddard Ave., Ignacio.
A Dr. Seuss movie will be shown at 2:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to read to children.
