Participants will learn about how black bears live in the wild, the natural foods they need to survive, how to hike safely in bear country and the causes of human-bear conflict and how to prevent it.

Space is limited, and participants must RSVP to [email protected] or call (970) 646-3566.

Long pants, rain gear, water and snacks are encouraged. The hike is easy for someone who hikes often. The terrain is moderate and includes uneven conditions, mild hills and occasional dense brush.

Hikers will meet at the entrance to the wildlife area west of Durango. To get there, take U.S. Highway 160 west to Lightner Creek Road, which is about a mile past Wildcat Canyon Road; turn right onto Lightner Creek Road; immediately after Lightner Creek Bed & Breakfast turn right onto a gravel road; and park in the gravel parking lot at entrance to the wildlife area. People will then carpool to hike area.
