The National Geodetic Survey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will continue an extensive, four-part field project, called the 2017 Geoid Slope Validation Survey.
Survey teams will gather information periodically throughout the summer from prepared concrete piers positioned along the highway about every mile. The survey aims to confirm the results collected during a larger project, the Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum, which used the Earth’s gravity field to measure elevation more precisely.
