The identification was made by San Juan County Coroner Keri Metzler.

The fall occurred Thursday morning about 9 a.m.

Scotland lost his footing while hiking on Jagged Mountain, a steep and rocky peak with a summit of 13,825 feet northeast of Chicago Basin, said Jim Donovan, captain of San Juan Search and Rescue.

Friends had a cellphone and personal-locator beacon to notify authorities.

Rescue workers used a helicopter to remove the body.
