In this season of numerous wildfires, many residents are asking what they can do to help, and one thing the first responders can use is a new pair of socks.
Elaine Ehlers started the program in 2012 after asking her firefighter son Ryan Ehlers what she could do. Now, the Durango Business Improvement District, Durango Chamber of Commerce, the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College and Durango Area Tourism Office have joined in the effort.
Firefighters need high-quality, over-the-calf socks from brands such as Fits, Smartwool, Thorlo and Keen. Durango Fire & Rescue Authority will handle distribution.
The campaign will begin Monday and will last through Aug. 15. Socks may be dropped off at the Welcome Center, chamber, Alpine Bank and Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, as well as participating shoe stores.
