Law enforcement responded Thursday morning to the High Bridge in Durango to assist a woman who, it was feared, might attempt to take her own life.

The highly public and traveled bridge crosses the Animas River where U.S. Highway 550/160 passes Walmart in Durango.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Rita Warfield said officers were alerted of the situation about 9 a.m. after the woman’s husband notified law enforcement that she was possibly experiencing suicidal tendencies and no longer answering her phone.

Both the Durango Police Department and the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office responded, Warfield said. It turned into a large police response that caught the attention of drivers during the morning commute on the busy corridor.

Authorities made contact with the woman and were able to talk with her. Axis Health was called to the scene, and ultimately, the woman was taken to Axis’ offices for an evaluation, Warfield said.

“It came to a good conclusion, fortunately,” she said.
