Colorado Parks and Wildlife held its second of three scheduled kokanee salmon giveaway days at Lake Nighthorse on Friday. An estimated 100 people showed up with a valid 2021 fishing license to claim about 5,000 kokanee salmon that had been spawned this week by CPW. The next giveaway will take place at 3 p.m. Nov. 19 at the lake. Participants must bring their own container. Kokanee are a landlocked Pacific sockeye salmon that naturally die after spawning. So far this year, CPW has recovered 2 million kokanee eggs during spawning operations at Lake Nighthorse, more than anywhere else this year in the state.
