The Durango Demons withstood a tough first-set slugfest en route to a sweep of the Bayfield Wolverines in Tuesday’s high school volleyball season opener at BHS.

The first set was close and needed extra points to be decided, but Durango prevailed, 26-24. The Demons won the second set, 25-16, and the third set, 25-6.

Seven different Demons had at least three kills in the contest. Aava Dreger had six kills and seven digs, while Eva Stewart tallied four kills and 20 assists. Sarah Somrak and Anna Folk both had four blocks, while Brooklyn Messier had four service aces and seven digs.

Durango will visit Pagosa Springs on Thursday. Bayfield’s homestand continues Friday and Saturday against Delta and Palisade, respectively.
