Colorado’s county clerks recently gathered in Burlington for the Colorado County Clerks Association conference, which concluded June 26. The event, which was hosted by Kit Carson County Clerk Susan Corliss with support from Eastern Plains clerks, offered county clerks a break from the job while allowing them to engage in professional development opportunities.
Clerks from across the state, including those from Montezuma and Dolores Counties, shared their appreciation for Burlington’s welcoming atmosphere, with local businesses even extending hours to accommodate attendees.
“It was a beautiful time to visit Burlington for the 2025 summer conference. Although the drive was long, it included a kaleidoscope of colored fields and amazing sunsets,” Montezuma County Clerk Kim Percell said. “Networking with my fellow clerks on various topics is an opportunity to learn best practices. Open discussions and camaraderie will always be my favorite part of conference.”
The conference, when it is held on odd-numbered years, has a more relaxed atmosphere, as this year’s November elections will mainly focus on school board races, municipal elections and the occasional statewide ballot measures, rather than the intense presidential, Senate and House elections in years like 2024.
Clerks were able to attend workshops on topics like budgeting, budget cuts, election reimbursement processes and more.
The association also recognized outstanding contributions, presenting the inaugural Motor Vehicle Service Award to Tammie Barnes, deputy county clerk in La Plata County.
The clerks were also able to hear from notable speakers during their time at the conference.
Colorado County Clerks Association Executive Director Matt Crane reportedly urged members to uphold the association’s legacy for unity, despite differing viewpoints that may exist among clerks.
“We give people space to disagree,” Crane said. “Yes, we have differences, but we are much stronger together. It is up to us to honor the legacy of those who created and sustained this association over the last 56 years to stay together and stay strong.”
