The National Weather Service in Grand Junction<\/a> says the chance for precipitation starts Thursday night. From Thursday night to Friday, there is the possibility for isolated thunderstorms that may carry rain.<\/p>\n

This part of the weather system could, in fact, have detrimental effects to wildfire danger if the storms produce lightning and no precipitation, said Mike Charnick, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

However, Saturday and Sunday has a promise of rain and cooler temperatures.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, Charnick said it is a safe bet that most of Southwest Colorado will see moisture, at least enough to get the ground wet. Higher terrains are more favored in this system, he said.<\/p>\n

The rainfall is expected to help firefighting efforts for both the 416 Fire and the Burro Fire.<\/p>\n

Charnick said this storm system is not a sign of the arrival of the monsoon.<\/p>\n

Instead, a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean \u2013 Hurricane Bud \u2013 is sending up moisture to Southwest Colorado.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a couple-day pattern change, not something that will stick around,\u201d Charnick said. \u201cBut it is a fortunate change in the weather pattern we\u2019ve been looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, where is the monsoon? Meteorologist Jim Andrus reported to Montezuma County Commissioners on Monday that the 30-day forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> shows the monsoon missing Southwest Colorado. NOAA\u2019s 90-day forecast shows the monsoon in our area, he said.<\/p>\n
