Boettcher teacher residency program<\/a>.<\/p>\nAccording to Jones, the district has budgeted $26,000 per student teacher based on para-professional schedules and benefits.<\/p>\n
The board and audience wanted the student teachers to sign a contract to stay in Dolores because of this line item.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bottom line is we do not know how good they are going to be or if they are going to stick around \u2013 it is just a guess,\u201d board Treasurer Casey McClellan said. \u201cIt is great they are local \u2013 that means something \u2013 but there is no way of knowing.\u201d<\/p>\n
McClellan suggested that the district match the Durango district\u2019s pay of $6,500 per person.<\/p>\n
\u201cDurango does not have the problem recruiting that we do,\u201d Livick said. \u201cThis is our biggest issue. If we do not go right, it is all for naught. If we can\u2019t get quality teachers in our classrooms and keep them there, then none of this is going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Livick said that from his experience, Boettcher residents who complete the program perform as well as third-year teachers.<\/p>\n
Board Vice President Kay Phelps admitted a bias as an assistant professor in education at Fort Lewis College, and noted her concern about alternative licensing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I look at the rigor of a four-year program, it is really hard to fathom that students can actually get that but of the licensure programs that I have looked at.\u201d Phelps said. \u201cBoettcher is very reputable, and I am happy with Boettcher, but I still have some reservations.\u201d<\/p>\n
In response, Sharon Maxwell, field manager for the Boettcher teacher residency program, cited Boettcher teachers\u2019 statistics of staying in the education field.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter five years, 95 percent of our teachers are still teaching, whereas people coming out of a regular college teacher prep program, it is about 50 percent that are still teaching after five years,\u201d Maxwell said.<\/p>\n
The board made no specific recommendation to Jones about the salaries of student teachers.<\/p>\n
The 2018-2019 budget will be acted upon by the board on June 26.<\/p>\n
