{"id":98282,"date":"2018-08-26T13:40:39","date_gmt":"2018-08-26T19:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/writer-rick-kempa-is-mesa-verdes-next-artist-in-residence\/"},"modified":"2018-08-26T13:40:39","modified_gmt":"2018-08-26T19:40:39","slug":"writer-rick-kempa-is-mesa-verdes-next-artist-in-residence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/writer-rick-kempa-is-mesa-verdes-next-artist-in-residence\/","title":{"rendered":"Writer Rick Kempa is Mesa Verde\u2019s next artist-in-residence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rick Kempa, a poet and essayist from Rock Springs, Wyoming, will be Mesa Verde National Park\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/meve\/getinvolved\/artists_in_residence.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artist-in-residence<\/a> from Sept. 3-15.<\/p>\n<p>He has served as artist-in-residence at Grand Canyon National Park twice, and at Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona, according to a press release from Mesa Verde public information officer Cristy Brown.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent books are the anthologies \u201cGoing Down Grand: Poems from the Canyon\u201d and \u201cOn Foot: Grand Canyon Backpacking Stories,\u201d and the poetry collection \u201cTen Thousand Voices.\u201d He recently retired after teaching at Western Wyoming College and is spending more time writing, Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>Kempa plans two free programs, in the park and at the Mancos Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday workshop: Kempa will offer a writing workshop at Mancos Public Library on Sept. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The workshop, he says, \u201cis an open invitation for writers to spend a morning together writing, walking, conversing and inspiring each other.\u201d Participants should \u201cbring whatever tools for seeing and writing that you may have: a pocket notebook, binoculars, perhaps even a magnifying glass.\u201d They are also welcome to bring a sampling of recent work to share. Space is limited to 15 people. To reserve a place, call Teri at 970-529-4642.<\/p>\n<p>Evening presentation: On Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Kempa will share stories, poems and pictures from his backpacking trips on the Colorado Plateau and from his time at Mesa Verde.
