A small, almost forgotten Catholic church with a big history, located off the beaten path in the unincorporated community of Tiffany, could get a chance at second life as it approaches its centennial.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just totally underappreciated and unknown by so many people,\u201d said Ruth Lambert, a cultural program director with San Juan Mountains Association, a nonprofit geared toward public land stewardship and education.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this is really a beloved structure that people really do care about. It\u2019s intact with no modern additions, so it\u2019s original in that sense \u2026 but it is deteriorating and people don\u2019t have the funds to fix it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lambert and others invested in the preservation of the Tiffany church submitted a nomination this week to place it in Colorado Preservation Inc.\u2019s Endangered Places<\/a> program.<\/p>\n

If listed, the Igelsia de San Antonio Catholic Church could be eligible for a number of opportunities for restoration and preservation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to try and get some acknowledgment of its importance,\u201d Lambert said. \u201cThen apply for some grant applications to actually undertake repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Built in 1928<\/div>\n

The Igelsia de San Antonio Catholic Church in Tiffany was built in 1928, about 35 miles southeast of Durango, along what\u2019s now Colorado Highway 151.<\/p>\n

As early as the 1870s, Hispanic people from northern New Mexico and the San Luis Valley migrated along the San Juan River, settling in small towns that flourished over the next two decades.<\/p>\n

But in the early 1900s, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation displaced many of these communities in its attempt across the American West to develop water storage projects through major dams and water diversions.<\/p>\n

Many people moved into the southern part of La Plata County, especially the Tiffany area, where they could buy homesteads that were not claimed by Native American tribal members.<\/p>\n

The Tiffany church served these people and regularly held services until 1972 when Masses were transferred to the Catholic church in Ignacio.<\/p>\n

Today, it also stands as the last homage to the Hispanic community in Tiffany, especially after the Abeyto dance hall burned down in 2015.<\/p>\n

Margaret Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero was born in 1957 and grew up in Tiffany.<\/p>\n

Although her family moved around the Four Corners, they always made a point to attend the Feast of St. Anthony celebration at the Tiffany church every June.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pews would be full,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero said.<\/p>\n

Families at the time would pass around caretaking responsibilities for the church. In the late 1960s, it was Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero\u2019s parents\u2019 turn, and they didn\u2019t relinquish responsibility for the next 10 years or so.<\/p>\n

Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero moved away in the mid-1970s, and although she would try to come back for the St. Anthony\u2019s feast, overall participation at the church began to wane.<\/p>\n

\u201cFamilies that grew up around this area started to move away,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero said.<\/p>\n

The once-thriving church started to deteriorate and be forgotten.<\/p>\n

That all changed in 2012, however, when Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero moved back to Tiffany and immediately took on the role of caretaker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a calling for me to take over,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been taking care of it ever since, trying to bring it back up to par.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crumbling exterior, beautiful interior<\/div>\n

Over the years, there have been no modern additions or significant changes to the church. The bell tower, the organ in the loft, the confessional, altarpieces and pews are intact and original.<\/p>\n

But the foundation is iffy, Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero said. And there\u2019s a long wish list of fixes, including installing electricity, drilling a well for water, graveling the parking lot \u2013 to name a few.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important to me because I grew up in this area, and I\u2019ve seen the church disintegrate little by little,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I hope to restore it so people have a place to come so we can hold Mass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kim Grant, director of Colorado Preservation Inc.\u2019s Endangered Places program, said about 20 sites were nominated this year across the state to be included on the historic places list.<\/p>\n

After a site is nominated, the organization assigns a person to review the location, take a tour and talk to the people interested in preservation to identify what the threats are to the place.<\/p>\n

In June, Grant and others were on a historic tour of Southwest Colorado and visited the Tiffany church.<\/p>\n

\u201cTruly an interesting little church with an interesting history,\u201d Grant said. \u201cThe interior was just beautifully preserved. But the exterior is really showing the wear and tear and age and limited resources people have to protect it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant said one thing was clear on the tour: The local community has a huge interest and passion to share the church and work together to preserve it.<\/p>\n

Sites selected for the Endangered Places program are announced in February, and there\u2019s still extensive review work to be done, Grant said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a small, modest enough project that I\u2019m optimistic it\u2019d be saved or restored,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lambert said if the Tiffany church is included in the Endangered Places program, she would like to get it listed on the National Register of Historic Places in La Plata County, which would open up grant opportunities.<\/p>\n

Building community<\/div>\n

Since Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero returned as caretaker, she has been holding the Feast of St. Anthony. Her first year in 2012, about 45 people attended. This past June, about 85 people showed up.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not attended by just Hispanic residents with deep roots in the area. More people from all walks of life are showing up, Mu\u00f1oz-Lucero said.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony is considered the saint of lost items. What namesake could be more fitting for a small church in Southwest Colorado that\u2019s experiencing a renaissance as it nears 100 years old?<\/p>\n

\u201cI really want it to keep it standing as a historical place for the community we\u2019re in, and the future community that\u2019ll come in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
