It\u2019s not just Hollywood, Indiana Jones. It goes back centuries to crazy ideas about the stone buildings of South America or the earthen mounds of North America,\u201d Tune said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a long-running theme in archaeology of people turning to outlandish themes for basic human building and achievement, and we want to address that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Using the internet to spread \u201cfake news\u201d parallels an increasing dissemination of fringe ideas about iconic archaeological remains, Tune said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese fringe ideas are more accessible and distributable than ever before, and we want to look at that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deter-Wolf will deliver the John W. Sanders Lecture, \u201cOtzi the 5,300-year-old Tyrolean Iceman and the World\u2019s Oldest Tattoos,\u201d the main fundraiser for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjbas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Juan Basin Archaeological Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Half the proceeds from the lecture will go toward San Juan Basin Archaeological Society-funded internships at Center of Southwest Studies and scholarships to FLC\u2019s Summer Archaeological Field School.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:parmijo@durangoherald.com\">parmijo@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">If you go<\/h4>\n<p>The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society will present \u201cFrauds, Myths and Mysteries in Archaeology,\u201d a free panel discussion, at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in Room 130 of Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College.<br>\n                It will also hold a fundraising event, the John W. Sanders Lecture, \u201cOtzi the 5,300-year-old Tyrolean Iceman and the World\u2019s Oldest Tattoos,\u201d at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Student Union Ballroom at FLC.
