Further cementing Durango\u2019s place in the world of craft brewing, two local breweries brought home gold medals from this year\u2019s Great American Beer Festival in Denver.<\/p>\n

Ska Brewing Co.\u2019s<\/a> Oktoberfest won the gold medal in the Vienna-style lager category and Steamworks Brewing Co.\u2019s<\/a> Colorado Kolsch won the gold in the German-style Koelsch category. The winners were announced Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

More than 2,404 breweries from 49 states entered more than 8,500 beers to the festival, including the four brews that Ska and Steamworks each entered, according to a news release from the Brewers Association, which hosts the festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you win something like that, it really validates what you do and everything you work so hard for\u201d said Ska co-owner Dave Thibodeau.<\/p>\n

He said Ska\u2019s Oktoberfest beer is \u201ca Vienna-style lager, so it\u2019s got a little bit of darker malts in it. It\u2019s not very hoppy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian McEachron, co-founder of Steamworks, said he appreciates having both Durango breweries win. \u201cWe were able to cheer for each other. \u2026 It always feels good to have Durango, Colorado, on that Jumbotron in front of thousands of other quality brewers,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s so good for us and our town.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken Martin, Steamwork\u2019s director of brewing operations, described the Colorado Kolsch as \u201ckind of a hybrid between a lager and an ale. It\u2019s light in style and it\u2019s got a little bit of wheat malt in there. It\u2019s kind of got a subtle fruitiness to it and that\u2019s pretty typical of the kolsch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were one of the first breweries to really take on that style,\u201d McEachron said. \u201cA lot of other breweries are finally getting what a beautiful style that beer is.\u201d<\/p>\n
