Protesters took to the streets of Durango during rush hour Friday to speak out against the possible appointment of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Republicans postponed a final vote on whether to appoint Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court to allow the FBI time to investigate claims of sexual assault against the judge.<\/p>\n

Later in the day, President Donald Trump ceded to open an investigation into his chosen nominee, giving the FBI \u201cless than one week\u201d to look into several allegations from women who say Kavanaugh sexually assaulted them.<\/p>\n

About 50 protesters lined Camino del Rio near the DoubleTree Hotel holding signs and chanting opposition to Kavanaugh\u2019s appointment. Protesters eventually moved north to line the intersection near Camino del Rio and College Drive.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s unfit to serve, and he demonstrated that yesterday (Thursday),\u201d La Plata County resident Beverly Ellis said of Kavanaugh\u2019s testimony denying sexual assault allegations. \u201cThat was not judicial behavior, and he lied under oath.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ellis is concerned that if Kavanaugh is appointed, it will be a threat to women\u2019s rights and reproductive rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a despicable person to serve,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s a political operative, not an appropriate person for the Supreme Court. We can do a lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jill Stoll, a Durango resident, said it would \u201cbe a disaster\u201d if Kavanaugh was appointed. She was encouraged, however, that the vote on his appointment was delayed to give investigators time to look into the sexual assault claims.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives me a little more hope they\u2019ll do the right thing,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd for the truth to eventually be told. That\u2019s not asking for much. We don\u2019t want this democracy of ours to go down the tubes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruth Weinfeld, also of Durango, said she is concerned Kavanaugh has taken the position that a president can\u2019t be indicted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo person is above the law,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

And Jim Bolan of Durango said he\u2019d like to see the political landscape move away from the \u201cbickering\u201d and instead choose a handful of Supreme Court nominees who have bipartisan support.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat way, we won\u2019t have these political fights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
