Residents of Montezuma County who want to get out of the house to celebrate Thanksgiving have two popular options on Thursday.<\/p>\n

For Pets\u2019 Sake Humane Society will hold its 15th annual Cortez Turkey Trot fundraiser beginning at 9 a.m. at the Parque de Vida pavilion behind the Cortez Recreation Center, 425 Roger Smith Ave.<\/p>\n

The 1-mile fun run\/walk for people and their pets starts at 10 a.m., regardless of the weather. The entry fee is $20 and includes a commemorative T-shirt.<\/p>\n

Costumes are encouraged, Sally Jo Leitner said, and prizes will be awarded for people and pets.<\/p>\n

All proceeds benefit the humane society. For more information, call 970-565-PETS\/7387.<\/p>\n

After the Turkey Trot, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church will serve up its annual Thanksgiving community meal beginning at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

The event typically draws more than 200 people for a classic meal of pie, turkey and all the fixings.<\/p>\n

Lead cook Victoria Atkins says some come to stretch their food budget, some are homeless, others are elderly, and some just come for the company.<\/p>\n

Volunteers also deliver meals to the homes of people who have signed up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s lots to be thankful for, and community is where it all starts as far as I\u2019m concerned,\u201d Atkins said.<\/p>\n
