Colorado Parks and Wildlife<\/a> is reminding residents that bucks are in the height of their mating season, and can be aggressive, especially Durango\u2019s resident deer herd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are looking for mates and they\u2019re intent on their dominance,\u201d said Joe Lewandowski, spokesman for CPW. \u201cIf they see anything that they believe is threatening to their \u2018manhood,\u2019 they can be, well, rather truculent in their demeanor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewandowski said bucks can pose a particular threat to dogs on a walk. Owners should keep a close eye on their pet, \u201cespecially if they see a buck wandering around \u2013 and there are several throughout town,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Patti Baranowski was walking her 10-year-old mixed-breed dog, Chewy, around 6 p.m. Friday on East Third Avenue when a buck attacked.<\/p>\n

Baranowski said the buck emerged from behind a tree and attacked her dog, which was on a leash. She said the buck came back a second time.<\/p>\n

Chewy was taken to the veterinarian right away, suffering a puncture into his shoulder from the deer, Baranowski said. Chewy is on the mend, and is expected to recover, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want the public to be very aware it\u2019s rutting season,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the deer in town, they\u2019re not afraid of dogs, they\u2019re not afraid of people, they\u2019re not afraid of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewandowski offered a few tips to keep owners and their dogs safe:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t let dogs wander, keep them on a leash when out for a walk.<\/em>If you see a buck while out walking, give it space.<\/em>Don\u2019t put out any food that could attract deer.<\/em>Deer can easily jump a fence, so the backyard doesn\u2019t necessarily protect your dog.<\/em>Even if you\u2019re walking without a dog, be wary of bucks.<\/em>Lewandowski said it is not unheard of for a buck to attack a dog. A few years ago, a dog in town was killed, he said.<\/p>\n
