{"id":96546,"date":"2018-12-22T19:53:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-23T02:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/teen-country-singer-returns-to-heros-welcome\/"},"modified":"2018-12-22T19:53:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-23T02:53:00","slug":"teen-country-singer-returns-to-heros-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/teen-country-singer-returns-to-heros-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen country singer returns to hero\u2019s welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!-- gallery:d56a9d29-32a0-4d01-aae7-5d393f678f7c --><\/p>\n<p>Farmington teenager Chevel Shepherd used her voice to win this season\u2019s \u201cThe Voice\u201d TV singing competition, but she almost lost her voice in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Since being named the winner during Tuesday night\u2019s show, the 16-year-old country singer has been swept up in a whirlwind of publicity, and her throat took a beating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to give that a break after all the interviews are over,\u201d she said, barely audibly during a phone interview with <em class=\"Nimrod Ital\">The Durango Herald<\/em> on Friday from California, where she has been since Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd, a junior at Farmington High School, was given a hero\u2019s welcome Saturday in her hometown. It started with a police and fire escort through Aztec and Flora Vista and end with a welcome home rally at the high school.<\/p>\n<p>At the Farmington High School Arena, Shepherd rushed to embrace some of her friends and family members from whom she has been separated since early November, when she traveled to Los Angeles to participate in the remainder of the 15th season on \u201cThe Voice,\u201d the Farmington Daily Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>She told the audience at the school: \u201cI feel all the support and all the love, so thank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also said she plans a January concert in her hometown.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-year-old won $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Music group, and she\u2019s already planning to begin work on an album after the new year, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd\u2019s journey to \u201cVoice\u201d victory began in February, she said. During the third episode of blind auditions, which aired in October, she chose to be on singer Kelly Clarkson\u2019s team, causing quite a stir because she did not go with Blake Shelton, who seemed the obvious choice for a country singer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-youtube naviga-video-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VOjy3HG1Lv8\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>After back and forth between the two judges, Shepherd ultimately went with Clarkson, and from there, it was not long before she was selected as the grand prize winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems like it went by quick,\u201d Shepherd said, adding that her life is already beginning to change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople just noticing me and stuff,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she will be back in school after the break.<\/p>\n<p>For the teen, \u201cgetting to spend time with all the other artists and creating such great friendships\u201d was the best part of the adventure. But, she said, being away from her father was a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd said that as a teenager coming from a small, Four Corners city, her experience has left her with pretty big life lessons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do anything your heart desires, and you should always follow your dreams and always be yourself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\">The Associated Press contributed to this article.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">If you go<\/h4>\n<p>Farmington will welcome home \u201cThe Voice\u201d winner Chevel Shepherd with a police and fire escort and rally.<br>\n                The city of Farmington, along with Farmington Police Department, Farmington Fire Department, San Juan County Sheriff\u2019s Office and San Juan County Fire Department, will lead Shepherd into San Juan County between 12:30 and 1 p.m. today. Family, friends and fans are encouraged to line the streets of Aztec, Flora Vista and Farmington with signs, flags and more.<br>\n                The procession will take this route: Aztec along N.M. Highway 516, Flora Vista along Highway 516 and Farmington along Main Street to Pinon Hills to College Boulevard to 30th Street to Sunset ending at Farmington High School.<br>\n                A welcome home rally will take place inside the Scorpion Arena at FHS.<br>\n                Shepherd is expected to arrive around 2 p.m., but doors will open at 1 p.m. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
