The highway could have intermittent closures of 30 minutes or longer, said Lisa Schwantes, CDOT public information officer.<\/p>\n

Earlier Friday, the southbound lane at mile marker 62 near Trout Lake was blocked due to a snowslide, according to the San Miguel Sheriff\u2019s Office. The Sheriff\u2019s Office posted on its Facebook page that the road was clear by 11:11 a.m.<\/p>\n

An avalanche control crew is setting off charges to trigger slides, and a plow crew is standing by to clear the road if the avalanche hits the road.<\/p>\n

The area where charges are going to be set off is cleared to make sure there are no backcountry recreationists in the area, Schwantes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to shoot down avalanche prone areas to make the road safe for the traveling public,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Chain and traction laws were in effect on Colorado Highway 145, which includes Lizard Head Pass.<\/em>At 6 a.m. Friday, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center<\/a> warned that the threat of avalanches in the San Juan Mountains was \u201chigh\u201d \u2013 Level 4 of five levels ranging from \u201clow\u201d to \u201cextreme.\u201d<\/p>\n

The avalanche warning, issued by Spencer Logan, was in effect Friday for the southern San Juans north to Steamboat and Flat Tops, Sawatch, Aspen, Gunnison and Grand Mesa. It was lifted on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cHeavy snowfall and strong winds overnight have created very dangerous avalanche conditions,\u201d the avalanche center said on its website. It added that \u201clarge natural and human-triggered avalanches are very likely.\u201d The avalanche warning was expected to ease on Saturday to Level 3 \u2013 a \u201cconsiderable\u201d threat.<\/p>\n

Chain and traction laws also were in effect for commercial vehicles on U.S. Highway 160 at Wolf Creek Pass until 10:10 a.m., accpording to CDOT. <\/em>CDOT closed the U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango and Coal Bank, Molas and Red Mountain passes.
